The first mosque of Canada – The Al Rashid Mosque is a mosaic of determination, resilience, cooperation, and collaboration of Muslims and non-Muslims in Edmonton. Resisting since 1930s – led by Hilwae Hamdon requesting the Edmonton Mayor, John Fry, provide them with a plot of land on which a mosque could be built to accommodate the growing Muslim community in the city.

The Edmonton Islamic Academy (EIA) was established in 1987 in the basement of the Al-Rashid Mosque with 21 students. The school quickly grew, and to date, more than 1400 students from Preschool to Grade 12. Now is ranked as #1 high school by university Mag – creating the balance between academics, adab and athletics. This happy combination is further enhanced by a multi-cultural community, where students from 40+ different diverse backgrounds are open-minded to be Respectful, Responsible and Successful leaders and contributors to society.
